Again, thanks for the information guys.

The pics above look uncannily like my soundboard! Yes it has an integral bass bar.

I have the strad poster dimensions to work from so I guess I'll try and smooth it to that, then fit a new bass bar. Should be fun.

I need to get a concave thumb plane - the only ibex thumbplane I have is flat.

Do check thicknesses before beginning. You will notice that the one in the photo is not entirely smooth. You can only do so much before you are likely to over thin.
