Great comments from all.
Benedict, there is really nothing wrong with having a separate tools section. It appears more organized and focused.
As I had time to think more on this, a picture of a company or corporation came in my mind. A small company with few employees would indeed meet in one room with the owner to discuss all issues. A large corporation would have divisions and departments all with their respective managers meeting in different rooms. I had opportunity to work for both small and large companies.
A forum (meeting place) is only as meaningful as the presence of active members. Once members for a forum leave, the forum doesn't really exist (no meeting - just a record of past meetings).
I scanned the whole forum to see actually how many pages there were on tool making. There are actually more pages dealing with the focused subject of "Control of interference by Strad and Guarneri" than there are on tools, and the posts appears to have stopped. The posts on bow making and bass making appears to have stopped.
Here is what I would suggest. Open a general post on tool making in this forum. Treat this post as your meeting place. If it would help, I could make it a sticky just like the "hide glue". Whether a new forum should be added should be a function of the number of posts and the rate of posting. I would be impressed if the number of pages came even close to the subject of "Control of interference by Strad and Guarneri" |

Lemuel, I will do that when I get enough time to put some info etc up.

The principles of blacksmithing was what I hoped to direct people to-- they are the same for tempering soundpost-setters or plowshares.
I made my bass soundpost setter of 5160 steel, hardened at the tips, and tempered to a stiff spring throughout the shank. Violin setter was made the same way, but tiny.
Some of my planes have wooden bodies, some have steel-- all have tempered steel blades. Blacksmithing again.
Some of my gouges and a few of my chisels were hand-forged by me, at home. Drill stock, plow disc steel, etc...Blacksmithing again. I am no expert, but I thought the forums I posted might have beneficial information.
I don't know how to make varnish brushes, but I did see a very interesting Youtube video on it one time. _________________ Chet Bishop

| I am aware of that thread, though the problem with that is that is about buying tools rather than making them. |

Sure, that's ok. You're not obligated to post there and can start a new post if you desire. Choose what makes you most comfortable. As long as members see and respond to your posts is what matters. |
