Would you (yes YOU) say that at 215mm lower bout is too big for a violin that's not a 5-string?

Point taken, though there's nothing wrong with custom cases. Anything I've built gets its own case.

In general, my impression of wider violins is that they can tend towards being too diffuse and boomy, without a solid core to the note. I'd rather work with a narrower instrument and try to get it to open up, than to try to compact a wide one.
