Here are some pics of it since I have touched up varnish last year, and grafted some spots on the edges for wear from old case. and a picture of the scroll, and side.

New pegs, like them alot!!

I guess I'm still on a cliffhanger wondering about your bassbar. Did you manage to see it or make any conclusions about it?

No have not yet, but I am going to have a tlak with the luthier hoefully this week that did the work when I take it back in. It sounds great and better than it ever has at this point. I had them go over the setup. I hear nothing out of the ordianry either.

Could you give us a clue about the reason for a crack? What sort of temperatures have you had at home . Also what sort of heating system do you have and where in the room do you store the violin when not in use? I mean , is it left high up on top of a wardrobe. (Bad idea). Or do you keep it in a case with a saucer of water? (I nearly said milk then ).That`s what Mr H used to do.

As far as clues go my only guess is years ago when the violin itself had major damage happen too it. Another violin student picked it up thinking it was his, and hit another student over head breaking the neck clean off and the button. No other damage was ever noted so that was probably it if any. Amazingly It has been repaired after the damage and had played as is for years. Thisis the first time in my life that a professional has accessed any damage or looked it over. The person that fixed it originally was not a luthier, but fixed it really well according to the latest accesment. The neck is straight, has not other problems and sounds like I said the best it has ever sounded since I have owned it. I will keep you all updated as this goes. Thank you all for the comments and suggestions.

Looking at those nice new pegs... they look like they might be too long... The distance should be 9-10 mm from the pegbox wall to the collar of the peg... maybe just my old eyesight.
... and that bass bar crack.... after that kind of "damage" anything is possible!... cheers, Mat

Mat I had the same reaction to the pegs.Almost a subconscious feeling. I am very glad I asked about the reasons for a crack. Broken over another player`s head. First time I have come across a real life classic like that. It always happens in films. Can you give us some clues about the violin attack. Was a woman involved? Was it in college ? Did he draw blood. Imagine the Doctor`s report.Attacked with a violin. I would have framed it. It must have made a fearful noise. A violin with a history.

I just heard the incident happen, I had my back turned at the time. It was 29 years ago when it happened. I was in the fifth grade, man I feel old now!! Laughing

Just two guys having a spat about nothing. I knew exactly what had happened by the sound, then noticed it was my violin in pieces on the floor. The school and the boy paid for the repairs at the time.

I seriously doubt it because after the incident he quit playing all together. I believe he was there to get out of regular classes.
