Should sound post should be the same as where the bass bar runs under the foot of the bridge on the G ?At least that is my starting point Some Say under the center of
the E string . I know that the post is back of the bridge moved near or away from the bridge . Any ideas anyone Thanks ken

The starting point is about 3 mm behind the treble bridge foot (3mm space between edge of soundpost and back edge of bridge foot)

Hi Doug Guess i did not explain what i ment well
The E string runs just inside of the trebble bridge foot what i mean should the E string run centre of the sound post that is what i have been told I understand what you said 3mm back of bridge to start
I suppose every Violin`s sound post has its own place to sit to sound right.

No, the sound post is not placed in relation to the E string. It's placed in relation to the bridge foot. Bridges can come in several (foot) widths (41 mm is standard, I believe). Also, if you tried to place it under the E string, what would be your point of reference? Perpendicular to the curved top, or perpendicular to the edge of the top? As you know, each instrument has its best location for the sound post, so things will vary a bit. The spacing of the strings is pretty standard.

Doug is right about the sound post being placed in relation to the foot
of the bridge. But, I might add that it is possible to end up with the E
String going down the center of the sound post, after it is placed in the
best location for that particular violin. This rarely happens for me, usually
the sound post location has to be a few more mms to the west, and any
where from 1 to 5 or more mms to the south. I have never heard of the
rule, that the E String should bisect the sound post, but I could be wrong.

That's an interesting idea. Let's think about it (I'm doing the math as I type, not knowing where it is heading): the spread of the strings on the bridge is, if I remember correctly (I'm not near a violin right now) about 33mm, as the crow flies. The base of the bridge is 41mm (as the crow flies, also), and the post and bar are both 1mm inside, which means their outsides are 39mm apart. Both the bar and the post are about 6mm in diameter, so from center to center would be 39mm - 6mm, which is. . . . . . hmmmm: 33mm. Interesting. I'd never thought about that before, but it sounds like the E and G strings do sit just about over the centers of the bar and the post. I'll have to think about that for a while. . . .

PS: That's in their pre-adjustment positions--the post could finally end up just about anywhere.

Thank you for the replys (Doug) I make a cut in a business card & put one part over the top & the other under through the F hole till it hits the bass bar or the sound post the that will show you where they are running at the bridge foot or verry close .You may know this.
