Hi Barry! Congratulations, Darol Anger is quite a famous client!!!

I'm curious about the wood choice too.

The wood is African Bubinga. It is dense and heavy but it makes wonderful violins. Obviously a symphony player would not play a violin made from an alternative wood but most any other genre' player will. The belly is being made form Engelmann.

Here is a photo of the back with the purfling and rough arching done.

barry.....my man.....thats what i'm talking about....

i,ve been experimenting with many types of woods and shapes...and getting great results as well....and while i'm not making fiddles for mr. anger....i do agree that "other woods" other than traditional ones can and do yeild great results....

symphonic tone is one thing
tone itself is a "stand alone" perception
what is desirable is subjective at best when related to non-clasical settings

now i don't really want to do this for money..BUT......if i were........i do not think i would want to compete with all the great traditional builders along with the chinesse....for the same market share......i perfer to step outside the box and create my own box....why just look at yerself' and your clients....mr. anger went to you for the fiddle because you are different and will go where others will not...

how many other bubinga backed fiddles are there?....not alot....so who ya gonna call.........bo'binga barry ,thats who

Very nice! I like instruments that aren't normal. I like the dark band on the neck too. What wood is that? I've thought about using 2 pieces of wood for the neck to use wood that was too narrow, but that takes it a step further.

barry wrote.........." most any other genre' player will."

there are many "other genre's"

while embrassing tradition, we must not negate, minimize or trivialize those who do not....

there are certain fundemental "numbers" that should remain constant, out side that however exisit's an entire unexplored realm of imagination in both astetics and acoustics....

Jessupe, I agree with what you are saying and don't misunderstand I think that the traditions of violin making are what we use as our basis for experimenting and trying to push the limits. I am just saying that the classical world is very structured where the other genre's are most accepting of change.
Darol's violin has it's third coat of varnish on it and will soon be ready to string up and I will see if it is as good as the last one??

barry, yes different strokes for different folks, i perfer to strokes the different folks and yet am very fammilar with the clasiscal crowd, i find you very inspartional in that you make some untraditional instruments and actually sell them to actual top level musicians...

i started my bamboo one, but did'nt like the glue up on the ribs so i scraped that for now...

however i do have a new "goldfish" started also{my funky fish shaped violin} that i will be making into a 5 string, much in part with your violin as insparation.

by the way really nice guitar...

Hello everybody.
I'm new to this forum and I'm happy that I found it.
There is a lot of great information, here.
I just started varnishing my first violin. So far I have applied the first two coats. This is how it looks now.

I'm now experimenting with madder lake for the colored coats, but I am not yet satisfied with the results. So I will surely ask some questions in the next time and maybe I can contribute something to other topics.

Matthias

P.S: English is not my first language, so I hope that all that I've written above makes sense. If not, please tell me! Wink
