You really think it's good? I look at it and I think 'oh if only I'd done this and that', but i suppose it would look worse to me haha  thanks for the encouragement ct, i really appreciate it.
As it is, i don't actually know of any makers near me. I think Melvin goldsmith is the closest. I'm completely self-teaching myself, but i have a friend who's been chatting with me over emails etc and helping me with tools.
Don - your violin looks great! My dad's an oil painter so i'm all too familiar with artists' oil colours! Good work.

My first scroll is sitting on my workbench still. It's been there for about twenty five years now, as a reminder of where I started and where I am now...
It's too thin for a 4/4 fingerboard, and the peg holes are way too big - even for new full size pegs. Oh well. Such is life. It was a learning experience.
Your work looks fine - and I really would like to see it (this neck and scroll) go on a first violin. Keep up the toil, as toil is necessary step, for a violin maker that is mostly doing it alone or by oneself, its fairly well necessary and usual.
I'd say - keep up working with the established luthiers as long s they're willing to put up with the visits! |

What I really think is good, is that you're carving wood into the shape of a violin.
Probably, you'll never get quite to the point where you stop thinking "oh, if I'd only done this and that..." Even on violin #'s 50 or 100.
Yes, I really do think it's good. It's lutherie. You're making violin #1. What more could you ask? Keep it up.

How far away is Melvin? He would be an excellent resource. If I were in your place, I would do whatever is necessary to get his input, if he is willing to give it.

I haven't spoken to mr goldsmith yet, but I intend to shoot him an email at some point to say hi and to have a chat.

I just got it now that you and Melvin share the same last name, cool!
Melvin has been a really helpful presence on the forums over the years.
I like seeing you doing things that develope your eye and hand J., calligraphy, a scroll, that is inspiring. Keep sharing what you are doing,

although we share a surname, we're not related (not that i know of at least). He does seem like a nice guy though, I'd love to chat with him.
I've got quite an artistic eye. I can tell if something's even a tiny bit off just by looking, which is probably why i'm so hard on myself about my scroll!

With Thanksgiving and all, I haven't checked out this thread.
Really nice, Don. Say, Don it looks like you left the area under the bridge slightly darker. Was this something intentional or just the way it worked out? Looks good regardless...If it's intentional, is is because of wear in that area or some other reason? I don't want this to come across as nit-picky. I'm just curious - that's all.

Here are some random pictures of what I'm up to in the workshop.
Hollowing out the back:
Ready to cut the f-holes:
Installing the bass bar. I clamped a square to the frame and used just two glued studs on the same side it worked very well.
These spiders invade the workshop before winter. I must have killed at least
40 of them.

Fjodor things are looking great on that fiddle! What pattern are you using? Ffs look real nice and I like the wing scooping. Also do you care to reveal any info on the graduations? European tone woods or other they look nice and did you measure density?

| Thanks for the kind words. It is my own pattern that i made for the latest violin. This is very dense top so ii should be interesting to compare the sound with the other violin which had a ultra light wood. Sorry i was a bit lazy to record rhe thicknesses but I think the back is around 5mm in the middle down to 2.5 in the lungs, weight 105g. Top is around 2.6 mm and a bit thicker in the middle 75 g without bass bar. I did not measure the density for the back but top was 0.47 g/cm3. The winter growth lines were very thick and hard so it was not a pleasure to work with All. European wood as far as I know. |
