I've always held Mr Darnton's methods in high esteem since they seem to be based on logic and observation rather than speculation and theory. It's hard to go wrong following his methods. I also listen up when Roger Hargrave is teaching. I'm sure there are many other luthiers using similar methods, but the willingness of these two men to share their knowledge has ment much to me.

Couldn't agree more with your choices of teachers. Mr Darnton is also mightly patient with us newbies when we ask stupid questions. I like Mr Darnton's "no fear" violin making attitude.

This another incarnation from my pattern. It will go on a Del Gesu model.

Red Maple?
Very clean scroll, regardless.

Yes, red maple.
I'm playing around with the shape of it, where the throat approaches the volute. Gotta have some fun with it.

D@mn!

The profile curves have a marvelous coherency.
That's your design?
I like the way the throat is open enough for the A string, without closing in on it, but mostly, I must say that I love the overall look; the "body" has no feeling of separation at all from the scroll itself, which is not common a thing.

Nice design.

How do you get the curls of the scroll, with such almost "machine-like" perfection? How many have you carved? I must admit that I am still rather weak in that particular area - even after many, many scrolls carved. Oh well, so it goes!

(inquiring minds want to know.)

Here's another picture I did of my very first violin:

I made this one with the help of Will Bartruff. He taught me how to do it through email correspondence. My job was to send him photos of my progress, and his job was to tell me to unglue it and try again. Wink I had never handled a violin prior to this project, and I was pretty clueless.

Does anyone else have photos of their first one?

Ok. First off, I must say that I really like these photos. In particular, I like the photo of your first violin. I don't know why, but *first violins* really interest me greatly. I'm sort of intrigued by what different people do with no prior knowledge of making...

I made my first violin in 1976, with the help of Paul E. Schaupp, in Inglewood California.

I will post a photo of it here, as soon as I can get a photo up on Flickr...
I still play it often, though I like the tone of later violins better - I cannot get rid of it or sell it.

Thanks for asking about first violins.

circa 1976

If I can find it, I'll post a picture of me holding it way back then, with my once long (now looong gone) "dreadlocks"...

Thinking about it, I must add that Paul didn't believe in carving his own scrolls, so my first carved scroll was on violin number two.

This one (number one) had a store bought one...

Hey CT thanks! I'm taking liberties with my strad template, I can't call it my design by any stretch, but I am enjoying pushing things around as I carve.
I trace my template closely and draw or carve the changes as I go.
To make the carving easier I dip the whole scroll in water, at least for the initial shaping. That makes a big difference.
Final cleaning up is dry using gouges, scrapers or rasps/sandpaper.
That one is number seventy something.
I like your first one, that looks way better than what I did.

Thanks for the tips, Don.

I had heard of people dipping scrolls in water, but have never tried it. I may try it this week, as the scroll I had begun for my current five-string project abruptly became firewood. (sigh...)

Your scroll is really impressive. Mine are never that regular...always a little rough-looking, by comparison.

My pattern is taken from the 'Kruse' poster.

i like the way it draws me to the center, some scrolls tend leave me wondering where the center is.

Nice work Don! I still think one of the most difficult features to execute on a scroll is where the fluting terminates at the eye.
Best,
