The last two posts are of my latest violin. There are a lot of things I like about this violin although the varnish job, which might fly, was not as predictable as I would have liked.

I meant to pull some of the color off by rubbing it out but I didn't have my usual stuff available so I used some toothpaste, which I have used in the past which was very gentle, but this other toothpaste has something in it which acted as a solvent on my oil varnish. I will remember that!
I can't blame it all on the toothpaste though, the whole process is a bit of a trick.

Hi Don,
Your first photo appeared thumbnail to me. Your last photo, the image tag was just slightly off. You can reedit your last post to see what was changed.

The format is:

Thanks Lemuel.

Sorry to disrupt the flow on planes. I would like to have inserted the pics of my latest violin when Ct requested some, I am just learning how to move images from my phone directly to the forum. My laptop used to do it but it is getting slower and needs to be retired. At least I can get an image up now, for some reason thumbnails are easier, I'm not sure how I got the larger image up.

Well, it was worth the wait, that violin is beautiful.

The edge work and corner work are done well - and I really like the finish or the varnish job (however you want to say it).

But whatever the case, particulars aside, the visual impact of the fiddle is really what I am looking at and commenting on, and that's what I think is so superb(!) and well done about this particular violin...

Great work Don - please don't ever feel like a post of yours is interrupting anything. Thanks for posting it, you have to comment on how you arrived there.
Getting a violin from pieces of wood, to what you have done, is exactly what I'm (we are) posting about - and why I'm posting.
I would say that the one word for the end result of what you've done here in inviting. That violin looks inviting.
It has me looking at all the particulars involved, like the ff holes and how they are positioned. The string and bridge positions. The way the cc bouts merge with everything else. Yes - this is a nicely done example of what we want to accomplish here I think.

Very cool Don, thanks for joining in with this.

you're welcome kjb, and yes, I didn't think to ask, but yes, I definitely would like to see a picture, or some pictures of the scroll also...

Interesting.

Thing I like about this violin? yeah, me too, there are a LOT of things I like here, and put simply, I want to play it.

I would love to drag a bow across those strings, and see what she has to give back.

How does it play?

Still some bugs in the posting of pics, I can do links from my phone easily though. Stay tuned.

It plays easily, rather forward but with some depth. It has some hot spots on the e string. I'm not going to adjust it much until it settles in some.

Thanks for the kind words. : )

The camera is on auto so the color looks redder here , it is about in between the less red and the red one.

You look like you're having a great time doing the thing that we LOVE to do - making violins.

Yes, that sums it up pretty well! At the moment I wish I had more time to spend on making though.
I manage to sneak to the workshop an hour or so in the evening when the wife and kid has gone to sleep.

Don, very good looking violin. I like the accentuated year rings on the top.
