I am wanting to make the tool, pictured in Michael Darnton's website where he is making a viola, that scratches lines in ribs at a set thickness. Anybody know how long the tool is?

Thanks for all answers in advance,

Terryfromok

Here's one like mine in use.

To do ribs, you hold the handle down, and pull the rib through, leaving long deep scratches.

David:

Do you use a punch for the top or use a backlight?

Best regards,

E

OUCH!

I meant "Michael": Do you use this tool on the top plate or use a backlight...

Distracted posting never works!

I don't use a backlight.

Terryfromok - I built one of these tools based on Michael's photo and another drawing I came across somewhere. I think you asked how wide the opening was and the opening on mine ended up being 35cm or about 14" across inside. For ribs it works great but I suppose that I wouldn't be able to shove a cello plate though it to set the depth like in the video. It's a nice tool to have though and sure speeds up rib processing!
