I was shopping the other day and saw what is labeled as a "Bore Light" made by Winchestor (at least that's the logo on it). It uses an LCD light and fits inside a 7mm bore. It has a 6" flexible neck, uses an AAA battery, is VERY bright. Fits through the lower part of the violin "F" hole very nicely. Cost about $5, and found it at the Wal-Mart sporting goods area.
Always on the look out for inexpensive alternates to expensive tools. At the link below, it lists for $2.99 on-line but then there's shipping. Make sure you get the one 715717.

Here is what I use ( the 16" bendalight) ...
http://violins.ca/tools/tools_luthier.html
It has a head diameter of 5mm (3/16 ") and 16" overall
It is not LED but is nice and bright and you can flex the shaft to any shape. fits easily anywhere thru most of the f hole.
Cheers, Mat |

Mat,
I have one of those, admittedly over ten years old. It worked great when new, but due to the really crappy switch mechanism it is now hit or miss whether it will light up or not. I have an LED light that I put together from one of those stick-on lights and some wire with a little soldering that works well. You do have to know what you are doing, though. I see more and more of the type Dave described and they keep getting cheaper. |

I don't like thick metal things. My hobby shop has all sorts of miniature lamps for use in model railways. The largest I found were about 3-4mm in diameter and a centimeter long. All seem to be 12 volts.
I have a 12 volt powerpack whose plug I cut off and solder two of the large lamps. This plugs into a wall receptical with its own switch. It works fine and can be snaked anywhere inside the violin. |

| My experience with the switch of the Bend-a-Light is the same as LP. Otherwise, I like it a lot. |

I got that light that light that Dave did, it is bright and another good thing is that it is directional and pretty even. I shine it at the mirror inside the violin and it lights up the area I want to see, usually the post, also the bulb doesn't stick out so there is no glare in the line of sight.
The switch is a pushbutton type with really strong spring on it, it makes me hope it will last. |
