| Okay, I just finished touching up all the varnish, fixed some open seams, repaired the neck area that had been previously done by another person. I also grafted some wood onto the front lower left edge that was worn. I thought I would use spirit varnish as that is what was thought to have been used on it previously by a luthier. I went over the entire violin in areas of major wear and tear, but no to hurt the violin. AFter getting the color where it was originally matching as best as possible I put a nice light coat of clear over the varnish since it is spirit or alchol based. Well ofter sanding it down to 12000 grit I polished it with rotten stone and pumice stone. Then polished it with some cream polish noticing it looked some what hazzy on the front only. After going over it completely only the front has the problem. Areas of the front look as if the clear coat or varnish is cloudy looking underneath it. I did the entire thing in many steps and taking time too wipe all dust away before putting on another coat. Any help would be appreciated on this. I am guess at this point I will need to redo the front of the violin. Which means another few days before I am done. |

What did you use for colors? Some are more opaque and differentially reflective than others. Also, it's a good idea NOT to sand anything until the very end. Sanding messes up the transparency between layers.
You might let it sit a few days before you start over--things have a way of clearing up over time. _________________ new blog at my site! http://darntonviolins.com/blog
