There was an article by the Violin Society of America that analysed vibrations inside a violin. They confirmed that the loudest sound volumes were not in exactly the same place as the positions of maximum wood vibrations. I might be picky to mention this but it`s not to offend anybody. When wood vibrates, the physical "disturbance " moves outwards in a fairly predictable pattern. As soon as each particle of wood has vibrated ,the energy is transferred to the air.Air vibrations obey separate rules and the sounds will radiate in their own complicated fashion which will include reflection from internal surfaces and also focussing and dispersion affected by surface texture and also complex curves. The VSA may take this for granted but it is good to have it written down. I feel better anyway.
