I'm a doctor by profession and avid woodworker at heart who has a nice cabinet shop in my house. My 7 year old daughter took up the violin and I am making one for her for fun. I know I will likely not sound great so I am making it look nice and crazy so it will at least look good hanging on the wall. The sides are
zebra wood, the back will be slab cut cherry with a traditional spruce top and a curly maple neck. It will also have inlays that will blend the zebra wood into the neck. I will post pics of my progress and ask for input. Follow along and I will try to keep it interesting. I am practicing on some Ash for the top to lessen my chances of screwing up the piece of cherry the took me an hour to pick out. My router will do most of the carving by using templates that I have yet to make. Have not yet purchased wood for the top plate and was hoping for suggestions on a good place to purchase spruce tonewood - preferrably planks rather than wedges. Also what carving set do you recommend?

Never mind. I just now noticed that you can only post pics on a different server so I am SOL on the build thread with pics.

I whould love to see that violin!!! I hope that you can think of a way to post pictures of it.

I think you can make it sound as good as it needs to be for a student. What size is it going to be?

It takes just a moment to register at Flikr.com and start uploading photos, then you can make the image links here, not hard at all.
