My daughter inherited a violin from my father. It came over with our ancestors from Ireland in the early 1800's. It has John Stainer 1736 stamped inside it. I can only find references to Jacobus Stainer on the internet and was wondering if anyone has any info about this violin or knows anything about John Stainer. Any info would be appreciated.

There were a lot of copies of instruments made, and labeled with whatever label the (mostly unknown) maker thought was appropriate.

Sounds like yours may be one of them. As you said, there are no references to John Stainer in the easy to find references. Hard to tell for sure without examining the instrument. Find a good appraiser or luthier in your area, and have them take a look at it.

Thank you for your response. I will get it appraised and see what they say.
