Why you want a violin made in China?
What for? as trader? for personal use
I have no idea how good they are in the high end.
Know that there are several well known makers, some got some awards in VMAAI
I know some privately own small scale factory, possibly quality control is better than mass production _________________ Newbie Maker Kelvin |

I can tell you that there are many differences between Chinese violins and European violins. It is very difficult to play a nice sound with Chinese violin. Because Chinese violins are made by two wood materials:Sichuan Wood and Dongbei wood.Sichuan wood is very closely related to European wood. But because of the reason that it is too soft, so it is often companied by Dongbei wood. Because Dongbei wood's sound is strong.
And the main characteristics about China violin are tight, strong and lacking warmth. But as the reason that there are only 20 years in China hand-making violin development. So we don't know what the sound would be several decades after in the future.
There are a hand-making violin which made by Yong Lin,a violin maker in Guangzhou. It's a medium violin which worth 500$ in his workshop. According to my playing feeling, firstly, it can spread 30 meters in the outside, secondly, its sounds are very different in European violins.Just like a little girl if European violin can be described as a powerful man.
As the paint are still drying, so the sound will change when the paint dry completely. |

i think Sichuan and Dongbei are the name of location of sources of those chinese tone wood. China do have maple and spruce grown within their territory.
But a question naturally comes up in my mind : are these wood harvested within China territory good tone wood to make a really good instrument?
Do chinese makers have good skills and adequate knowledge to make a superb violin? I really don't know how to say regarding this.
Some chinese luthiers got medals in international violin makers competition.
I am trying to take a neutral stand, but i really can't come across any good violin made 100% using chinese wood and material within china territory. _________________ Newbie Maker Kelvin |

Some Chinese violin factories imports tonewood from Europe to make instruments, but there are Chinese violins made with local wood too.
The Chinese makers who got medals in competitions were trained outside China, and are not living and working in China, they live in North America or Europe, I think. _________________ www.manfio.com

yea, some chinese instrument factories import tone wood from Europe or elsewhere and make instruments within China; but to my experience and knowledge, in that case still can't see any excellent violin made.
That's why i'd incline to think they lack adequate know-how or materials (or patience) to make a very good instrument
those medal chinese winners did receive lots of training outside China
might be able to explain why China can only produce low end or medium grade instruments
i'd not consider to buy a China made instrument unless the maker can prove its superb quality such as let me listen to a recording first of all _________________ Newbie Maker Kelvin |

Well, you are talking about factory made instruments, and that's what they are, factory made instruments.
Don't expect a master instrument made in a factory. I like shrimp raviole, I can't go to Wall Mart and get it ready made, so I have to make it myself. The same with violins.
Violin making is a traditional craft envolving many things, including tradition, cultural enviroment and the proper inner attitude, the materials are just part of it. _________________ www.manfio.com

As a professional violin player, I can identify the differences between CHinese and European violin. Yes, every professional violin player can do it, I ensure.
There is a chance to understand China violin for the friends who are interested in Chinese violins. In 2010, on the festival of Milano, A Netherlands man will play three concerts in Verdi Hall. He will use a good violin which made in Sichuan wood and Dong bei wood. His name is Zheng. On the plan it should play in 2009, April. But as the reason for the recession, it will put off one year. |
