What is the purpose of the boiling/heating stage in this recipe? I can understand that warming it will make filtering a little quicker but I'd rather omit the boiling stage. I can only assume that the heat has some influence on the resins, but what?

as far as I am concerned, it speeds up the assimilation of the resin into the alcohol.

I can understand that, although I haven't experienced much difficulty in getting the component parts to dissolve pretty quickly. I do leave the jar above a radiator. The only time I had problems was when using old dewaxed shellac flakes, clearly they had gone past their shelf life. Unsure about seedlac - I don't know if the unprocessed stuff lasts longer and I haven't had mine long enough to say.
What of Brushes for Spirit? I have a black Cattle haired brush that I dislike (could be my technique). I also have a mix of Sable and synthetic but it's a little narrow for the purpose. I's be interested in peoples thoughts on Squirrel.

"I's be interested in peoples thoughts on Squirrel."

Tends to be tough. Best if cooked slowly, in a stew, I would imagine. Lots of tendons... I don't bother anymore, myself. Smile
