There is a supplier who is selling Orphaned violin tops.
I assume that each half is from a different section of the tree.
Are these any good? Any disadvantages?

Well, the halves won't be book matched, for each half the reflectivity could be different, the absorption of finishes will be different etc.
In other words you can end up with the two halves of the instrument looking different..... if that matters to you.
... but how much will you really save?
