| New to stringed instrument repair (won't call it restoration as still working on inexpensive student instruments). Question is regarding pegs on a small cello. The ends of the pegs include a flanged component threaded into the main peg body that when tightened with a screwdriver acts to draw the peg into the peg box. I can't find anything similar online. Does this style of peg have a name? I assume this is an inexpensive alternative to precisely reaming the holes, correct? Also guessing that over-tightening of the thread contributed to cracking of of the peg box. Thanks. |

| There have been many variations of this type, few (if any) of which are still marketed. I'm not sure, from your meager description, which one you have. Most have a fiber bushing glued into one side of the peg box to provide friction adjusted by the screw. Those are unlikely to crack the box, but there are other varieties. |
