I suppose that many people are now aware of the theft of the 1715 ex-Lipinski Stradivari last week in Milwaukee. Since I took care of that instrument for the owner, my shop has been fielding a lot of request for photos from the news media. To make that easier, we've put up a number of photos of the instrument in a zip file that's linked to via an article that you can access via our site, at the bottom on the right of the first page.

It's a big file, but makers might find the photos useful, too. Start at

Thanks for the link. The theft is a very unfortunate event, but the photos are great and very useful indeed.

What does one do with a stolen Stradivari? That piece is hard to move.

One of the news reports that I read said that it is typical for stolen instruments of this caliber to be left in a safe place once the thieves realize that it will be impossible to sell such an instrument. I kind of see this point but at the same time, I would think that the thieves knew their target and would have some sort of black market connection. Isn't this more the case and then the instrument re-emerges years later? I'm just curious. Regardless is is indeed unfortunate.

Currently the media in Milwaukee are reporting that three people have been arrested in connection with the theft, so maybe we will get some answers about it.

Fantastic! I hope some huge good comes of this, like a sharp spike upward in attendance at concerts where this instrument is played, by a fascinated public.
