OK, here's the electric that has been in the "wings" for the last five or ten years.
I'm working on it a bit also. (I know, I know)
I think it's probably time to quit posting for a few days - and give it a rest for a while, but this is finally moving forward forward a bit also. I believe that I'll need to go to the Roswell Adult Center and use their jig saw, since I sold mine some years ago in a garage sale...
The holes need to be cut into the shapes indicated by the drawing - straight through and square to each other and the flat bottom - and without regard to the arching of the "body".
Yes, it's jig saw time. Then you can see the cross bar where the bridge will go. The electronics will go in the chin rest area - which will he hollowed out from the underside, and have a screw on cover...
Actually this ought to be fun. _________________ Look,

don't know what happened to the post previously,
what electrics are you planning on using in the violin??
I like the design, been kicking around ideas for the last year about making one, still kickin. |

Thanks Mat - I will definitely post my progress on this project. The Roswell Adult Center has closed it's wood shop, and I haven't been able to find one (a jig saw) yet. I may have to cut into this with my band saw, which will mean closing up the cuts through the walls into the areas I want to cut out or remove, with small wooden sheets - and make it look like an intentional design element...
Oh well - so go these projects!

Kjb - I don't really know yet.
Back when I first made this, I did post elsewhere, asking about what type of electronic or electromagnetic pick-up I could buy or make for this project...
No real answer then.
As, I wanted a screamer, sort of like the tonal result or output that can be gotten from a (screaming) electric guitar. (as opposed to a pick-up that was essentially like a pickup for an acoustic guitar, but for an acoustic violin - right?)
Nothing then was available quite like that, I believe, and I did think about winding some pickups of my own in an arch configuration, and with central poles in the coils that could be adjustable in order to balance the output...
Electronics was an old hobby of mine and I presumed that I could get the results I wanted simply by designing what I wanted and then building it - but the truth is that it (electronics) is something I was engrossed in till about graduating high school, after which, I simply realized that it wasn't as great a desire as becoming a graphic artist was, so I quit the study and practice of electronic design, and pursued a graphic arts career instead.
Thus, I did design and start making this electric violin, but I did not continue on through designing the pickup and the electronics systems for it...
I wonder if there are appropriate electronics available today? for purchase?
Got any ideas?
Anyone?

Could you chisel it out as like doing a peg box?

I am interested also. I would like to make an electric Cello --- too much wood for me to hog an acoustic. |

| I think you would lose a lot of structural strength by cutting through the sides and relying on end grain glueing of shims. Why not use an Emanuel powered coping/fret saw. You could also use your drill press to drill the corners. A radiused corner would be stronger. If sharp corners are a design element, then just square the top a few mm. |

| most of the electrics that I see talked about are piezo, they do have magnetic also but don't seem to be used as much. lots of cheap ones to experiment with, but all need a preamp to get enough boost. Most piezos mounted on bridge somewhere, under feet or on bridge. |
