Spec - one of my three 4 year old grandsons, ( this one, is my youngest daughters son) got his first violin today from Grampa (you know, I've written about that SOB here before...)
Also known as Freddy James, Spec got his nic-name (again from Gramps) when he was born a preemie - he as so tiny.
Now he's getting really big (like his Daddy is)- and he's playing it (the vln.) continually in the living room - sitting behind one of the reclining armchairs...
Ahhh, my little spec. (I think he's gotten bitten already.)

Oops, my apologies.
It seems that every time I go and log on to flickr, everything is completely different than the last time I went there...?
Of course, it is so miraculously simplified now, I cannot seem to be able to post anything anywhere anytime, anymore.
I'll figure this out and start this post - even if it takes me another day to figure out what the he double l is going on.
Grrr....

Yes Mac, you are seeing the real him, there.
He's a very confident young man, which is a VERY good thing - because he doesn't recognize it as confidence or self-confidence yet. If you look in his eyes you can see that he's just there, happy and proud.
Which has not always been the case with him.
This young man has had to fight for normalicy and health, since the minuite he joined us here on Earth.
He's still 90% deaf in one ear, and has a dramatic speach/ learning problem (they call it a disability, but it isn't really that at all) - & many ect.'s. - that none of the other grandchildren have had to deal with.
But he doesn't seem bothered by any of it anymore (we make SURE he knows were behind him) he just continually WORKS at everything, very hard.
Can you tell that I have a real soft spot for this young man?

Oh yeah, also, that's his sis there in the background... she's learning her violin presently too.
She's a beginner, but now that her brother has one, she's all of a sudden the experienced "EXPERT".
(Hah!, kids, you gotta love it!)

That little guy has a sparkle in his eye that tell's me he might just use that fiddle for a fly swatter or a nice ping pong paddle if goaded a bit.

absolutely.
I *sense* <g> that you know something about what I am talking about here.
I never actually had any kids of my own - their chances of winding up spending a lifetime sitting in a dialysis chair three days a week, would be about one in three. (polycystic, blah blah blah)
For very many years, I devoted my self to whatever my hobbies were. Painting, drawing, making violins, talking on the internet - etc.
Big (almost a lifetime) mistake.
Now with an adult son, and two adult daughters and seven grandkids - I have come around and recognized that there is only so much a man can do that is worthwhile in life, and once God sees fit to place you (anyone) in such a situation as this, as a Grandpa - well, all priorities change and reality becomes a different thing.
Whereas I used to consider myself primarily a violinmaker - I now actually do consider myself primarily "Grandpa" - though I do still make violins (and lots of other things)... (Sorry if I'm going on and on. I am a type A after all.)
But the truth is - that violins are merely a passion of mine, that really do take a distant second, for various reasons.
Yes, I'm an extremely lucky guy. Honestly, I don't know if there is a God or not - but he has been unbelievably good to me.
Ok, I realize that is not really what belongs on a violin site, and I'll shut up. - but perhaps it is a thing that can be said, and help someone along the path to seriously making violins, even in a *difficult* situation?
