May 10-11 the Southern Violin Association will be holding a makers competition in Nashville, TN. This is our first competition, so we're limiting participation to just 50 violins. Any violin made during a makers lifetime is eligible, so long as it has not scored a medal at the VSA or any other competition. We're also going to have special recognitions for regional makers and "fiddle" makers. Still, the primary focus will be on traditional/classical instruments, but with a southern flavor. Just so you know, ALL instruments will be judged on the same workmanship criteria but we will be looking for instruments that have been set up for "fiddle" and designated by their makers as such, and will select from among them that which best exemplifies the sound/setup required for a "fiddle" player. Since the competition will take place in Nashville, we will have a world-class fiddler acting as tone judge for those that are identified by their makers for the "fiddle" competition. We really want to appeal to ALL makers, but expect a greater number of classical set up instruments, and they will be judged by professional classical violinists for tone. While we don't want to discourage anyone from competing, we want to make sure "fiddle" makers know they will be competing with traditional instruments for workmanship. "fiddle" is not synonomous with "poorly made."
By the same token, we want classical makers to understand that they will be judged by the same standards used at the VSA and other competitions, despite the "fiddle" competition. The reason we established this organization was to support the southern makers, yet the competition is open to all comers. As a southern maker myself, I found that the VSA meetings and compeitions were never held in a southern city, so with this competition in Nashville, we're getting our feet wet, but expect perhaps next competition to be in another southern city like Atlanta, or Birmingham etc.
What some makers might also find interesting, is that the competition is open to any instrument ever made by a maker, it might be something he made ten years ago, and didn't score a medal at VSA, etc.
