I used to seal the insides, reasoning that like in furniture making, coating both sides of a panel helps resist aggresive warping, or in the case of a violin, stress created by uneven moisture absorption where one side is varnished and the other is not.
Then I read that there is little evidence in golden period instruments of an overt coating... so I stopped doing it.
My instruments started sounding better... is that because I was getting better as a maker and it had nothing to do with this change?
I have no idea.
I can say that not coating the inside has no evident (to me) negative effect on the integrity of the instrument construction wise...
