| My new violin arrived today, it sounds very good at a glance it looks good, also upon closer inspection I find many flaws , deep looks like file scratches on the ribs , the spirit varnish has a couple runs in it and the orange color isn't what I expected , the scroll could have been carved better also , the top and back plates aren't carved with the same arch which probly dosent make any difference , inside the f holes looks like it was painted with black paint or something black, f holes are cut real nice and look even.This is a copy of a paul Baillys copy of a strad , I don't know how accurate that is , I don't suppose it makes any difference anyway. Overall I can look at this violin and the other german made violin that I have and keep in mind the flaws and Not make the same mistakes on my builds that are in progress as of now.Might sound like im complaining but im not really, for half a thou I suppose it ok for now. |

Keep in mind that good violins are, after all, hand made. Any machine can produce clean work.
I always paint the inside edge of my f-holes with dark brown oil paint. I also do this for the pegbox, which is usually a little rough on the inside anyway. Makes it looks nicer.
Personally, I'm highly in favor of violins that look hand-made. A few tool marks here and there are quite all right by me. Of course, if it's a copy of a really clean Strad or something, probably it's not up to par.

I was a little disappointed that it didn't come with boxwood fittings . I got ebony The violin plays very well and sounds pretty good , actually its the very first one I bought from a maker , the old german violin I have is over 150 years im told but that's another story lol, like I posted earlier ill use them both to hopefully to improve upon them in my builds, seeing where they lack in workmanship and fine finishing , all in all im fine with the instrument . thanks for commenting  |
