I recently goofed up and had to do a button graft. Here it is:

The one I've done had the insert dovetail slightly after the purfling point into the top plate, and I extended the insert right into the plate, then planing away the wood... in other words I made no effort to cover the insert by the top block.

Yes. I was taught to bring the hidden tab right straight through the platform on the inside, to give a lot of gluing surface.

That sounds like good advice. The truth is, I've only ever had this procedure described to me, so this is me putting it into pictures. I'm always grateful for feedback!
