I recall seeing a tread some time ago where peg dope was discussed. Michael D said (as I recall) that when fitting new pegs to use lots of dope and work it in until the inside of the hole is all black...
Well here is a pic of a reworked hole for new pegs on an old violin... But the black is not even in the hole... It seems to be darker and lighter in streaks parallel to the peg.
My question... is this normal due to the flaming & grain of the pegbox or is it a deficiency of my reaming??? Or not enough dope? ... I use Hill peg dope that comes in a lipstick like tube..., Thanks... Mat
PS... the notched edges are from previously installed mechanical tuners.

Those holes don't look to me like they have nearly enough dope... If you repeatedly rub a good glop of the dope on the peg... smear it in with a few rotations, remove and repeat till you have an even black coating all around the peg hole you'll end up with pegs that are a pleasure to tune.

They rotate without any grabbyness or stutter, they stop smoothly and stay put.

For new pegs and new holes I generally Use the Goetz Peg dope, What you have here looks like either holes or pegs that are not round and are only contacting on 2 spots in the holes, these are the spots that are dark. Too much hill peg compound will cause slippage, like I mentioned, I use the goetz peg dope for new pegs as a base, then at the end add a little hill compound. Check the pegs for roundness, and the reamer.
