If I remember right, .25 mm is the thickness mentioned.

I'll also add this.

I've tried it on a number of instruments, and depending on how steeply arched the zone of contact is in the post region, the post resting on two maple surfaces can get rather "slippery" and want to slide inward under string pressure.

Actonern Did you try a little rosin dust to cancel the slipping?

Actonern Mentioning rosin reminds me about all the questions on how to clean bow hair. The questions are from players who may not have spent any time cutting resinous wood with a handsaw. As a novice I used to find the saw would jam soon after starting to cut.The resin would stick to the saw and bind in the cut.The only thing to shift the stuck on resin was methylated spirits. After that a piece of candle wax rubbed on the saw stopped any more sticking (for a while).
The players version of that cure would be to wash the saw in warm soapy water or stink the house out by soaking in ammonia. You know all that but some players may not .Worth jotting down for future reference. For the player it is important to know that the basic ingredient of violin rosin comes from the sticky resinous sap of a tree. Same stuff! Some kids here in England think Sheep lay Eggs. Think on!

I tried the small maple veneer this week that Actonern recommended. Michael, you are right; the sound is brighter, at least on this instrument. The condition of the instrument's top suggested it, so I thought I would try it as on this particular instrument I was after the brighter tone. Thanks for the advice to each of you.

All the best.
