I've still got a lot to learn, but I suppose that's half the fun, right? Stradivari was experimenting til he died, and look at all he achieved!

Well, really, that's all the fun, or at least it seem like a bit more than half - learning that is.
Making any instrument, if that truly does become your life's goal, is an exercise in learning (well, and doing) but I believe all of the greats - guitar builders, violin builders, and all the rest - spent most of their time learning the craft and building, hands on, eyes open.

And then, when thy learned enough, they made (make) instruments according to their own understanding of the craft, which, by that time was (is) enough to make them masters of what they were (are) doing, able to construct things beyond what is normally made - for accomplished players of these instruments.

In one way it's pretty simple and in another way it's a lifetimes endeavor. I never forget that we make instruments to be played. And that becomes the goal (and product) of every real instrument maker - to be played and accepted by players, as a maker of top level instruments.

You sound young and energetic enough to have a go at becoming a real maker, if that's what you decide to do. Ahh, what an adventure!
