That's a handsome cello Chet. I admire your relentless industriousness!

Nice Chet!
One of the challenges I find varnishing Cellos... is how to get intensely colored varnish evenly applied over the instrument before it starts to tack up and blotch.
Less intense colors are easier to do... how deep do you intend to have this color go?
Best regards,

Thanks, folks! I took three more days off this week, to see if I could get this thing done and ready to show. I'll post more pictures later.

Ernie;
Sorry to have missed your question: I am not sure how deep to take the color-- certainly deeper than it is right now, but the wood had a deep enough color in the brown direction that I can't see moving very far red/orange.
All I can do is make the spruce complement the maple, and try to get a reasonable color. I am thinking a deep honey color is where I will most likely end up. That is OK. I have seen some old cellos in that color range, and I'd be happy with that, I think.
Originally, I had planned to model as closely as I could after the "Davidov" original, but there are too many built in differences to make that a rational hope. So-- at this point it is strictly a case of doing the most attractive, pleasing, reasonably traditional color scheme that I can, and be content. I have lots of wood. I can try again. _________________ Chet Bishop

Well...that is nice to hear. Here is how it looks this evening. I am thinking three or four more clear coats.
I don't want to leave the varnish as thin as I did on the last one, but I don't want to overdo it, either. This is four coats, essentially, today. _________________ Chet Bishop

Here is the cello, as of tonight. I could have it playing tomorrow night, or maybe Monday.
I have a few more things to do to get ready for the show, but the cello is nearly done. _________________ Chet Bishop

Chet,
Great looking cello.
I must say, that making a cello looks like a huge undertaking... bigger than I've ever wanted to undertake.
Though - I must also say - thinking about it as if it was simply a giant violin makes it seem more likely of a possibility (for me at least).
Great job.
I hope you post sound clips of it being played, when you get a chance.

Thanks, Craig;
Since I don't really play, it may be difficult to get a recording of some good playing on it. We'll see, though. Glad you like it.
Yes, in a way, it helps to think of it as just a big violin. Everything is more work. On the other hand, with my old eyes, the details being larger seems to help a little. I still used my visor for certain details, cutting beestings, etc.
Figure on about three times the work, and four times the cost. I can build a violin in 80-100 hours, and a cello takes me about 240-300. All depending on how things go, of course.
