On the first site shown there is a book by August Riechers .so I looked him up and over on the "other" violin site there is a dealer with one of his "fine violins" for sale.------I love that.--A little bit of living history.

Thanks! I have many many violin books, in Italian, French and English. These old books are quite interesting but, from a maker's point of view, more recent books are much better, they contain much more information that came to light with the advance on science and historical research.

Does the advantage of recent books apply only to building? Or does it apply to varnish, too? It seems like most builders try to recreate old recipes for varnish while completely discounting the newer concoctions.
