Original posted in "Everything Else"

I have recently received my fathers severely damaged violin. i don't think it is a valuable item but it has great senimental value for me. I am in the process of restoring it as best I can.

I would really like to know it's history. My father passed away before i could ask him about it. I believe it is a mail order item, probable from Sears, anywhere from mid 50's to early 70's.

If someone could help i can send pics. The only numbers i see on the item is a blue number stamp on the neck under the finger board, 355. Also the numbers 8, 21, 27, in pencil or marker under the fingerboard on the neck. These numbers and stamp also appear on the underside of the fingerboard.

I would be grateful for help of any kind.

Thanks

You haven't given us anything to work with. Please post pictures of all parts of the instrument. Are there any labels on the inside?

First of all, restoration usually means keeping as much of the original as possible. Most restorers won't totally strip the finish off anything, whether it's instruments, furniture, or anything else. By removing the original finish, the value of most pieces is lowered considerably.
As for the instrument itself, I don't have any good ideas about the origin. I have one with similar continuous linings, that I don't have any info on either. The painted fingerboard isn't too nice, and all the goopy glue isn't too great either. Looks like you have your work cut cut out.

That "soundpost" is some kind of abomination that was put in by someone who didn't know anything about violins. Never seen one like it. Totally wrong!!!! Also, what is that glued to what were probably cracks in the front (Again, totally wrong), and what's up with the end block?
