I use a thin knife, but mostly drip glue at the outside of the joint and then run the knife around to spread it around, letting capillary action do most of the work.
If you're working on a new violin, when I say wet, I mean WET--I really soak the ribs down thoroughly. _________________ new blog at my site! http://darntonviolins.com/blog
