is this sitka spruce we are talking about?

Mine is from Romania, carpathian spruce I am told, sort of fine grain.

My top was bought from Germany, so I assume it is from there. Yes it is funny that this violin responded so well right from the start. It was strung up over night before i played it much. There is still a bit of new rawness to the tone of course... The tailpiece cracked so I had to install a new one this evening.

That one is red maple, others are European except far right is local red maple.
No progress on anything lately, I'm swamped with repairs.

Yup, how time flies.

I have put this task off as long as I can, my old blade will advance no more so I will make a new one out of this giant solid high speed steel blade.

Have you tried cutting a new notch for the adjuster, and perhaps elongating the slot? You'll have to do all that in spades for the new one.

That plane must get a LOT of use to need that much sharpening.

It was an old Stanley blade but it barely lasts long enough to do one fingerboard, honing won't bring it back, I have to grind it. I'll sometimes use another plane for the rough part.
I dream that a better blade will do board after board ...
