Here are the photos Jacob sent me earlier:

Thanks again, Jacob. Perhaps you could explain which instrument this is?

Sounds like Koestler's Arrival and Departure.

Chet, I like the look of the one piece back. Nice antiquing.

Welcome Jacob to the forum...I'm glad you've arrived safely at this refugee camp. Wink

Thanks for the welcoming posts.

Chet, it is a pochette from 1735, which explains its pristine condition. I believe the instrument is in Japan. It's called the "Chardon". There is also another pochette called the "Fountaine" (I think?) which has very little wear, as does the "Alard" del Gesu which is in a museum in Paris. I believe when Vuillame went to find the "Messiah" after Tarisio's death, he found it together with the "Alard" in a chest of drawers in Tarisio's cottage.

I'm thinking that Chet's natural tendencies--the shapes of corners he tends to make, his natural edgework, etc., will work well with the del Gesu model.

Well! In that case, I guess I have just switched styles. Smile

The fellow I took the new fiddle to last night, (Adam LaMotte) made the same comment, essentially. He liked this one more than my previous work, and encouraged me to make more of this style.

The instrument did not have any of the "new" sound that I usually get for the first few days. It started right off sounding "played in". I have no idea why...

He took it with him to his orchestra rehearsal last night, to show to other musicians, so it will get some positive attention that way. He is keeping it for a few weeks, to see how the sound develops. We'll see what happens.

PS - I was invited by Lemuel to introduce myself as a new member.

I'm another refugee from the "other" forum. I recognise several names here, so I will refer the rest to my website.

To summarise, I'm an autodidact in the trade - so here I am too.

Jacob!

Welcome here!

autodidact's are welcome as long as they bring their teachers along with them ...

That way we all know who it's proper to yell at. (We can yell at you can't we?)

Welcome!

Hi Craig,

From our many years together on the "other" board you should know that I'm pretty used to being yelled at Wink

Hello and welcome Jacob. I'm sure you don't know me from TOS. I was always in the back of the room doodling or reading a comic book and as much as I wanted to never participated in the spit ball contests.
Haven't you worked with Brian Lisus? He seems to be a very nice person as well as a fine luthier.

Forgive my ignorance - what's TOS?

I've never worked with Brian - my loss, I guess. I've visited several times though, and yes, he is a very nice person and a fine luthier. His emigration to the USA is an enormous loss for South Africa and Cape Town. The classes he ran produced some fine work, but more importantly, people educated and enthusiastic about lutherie.
