Michael;

It took me a long time to realize that you can't feed people who aren't hungry...and I wasted a lot of time, as well as emotional involvement trying to help people who only wanted attention, and had no desire to change their patterns of behavior.

I don't know that I have completely weaned myself from "picking up strays" as a friend called it, but I have really tried to be conscious of what I am letting myself in for.

The litmus test that friend prescribed was to give an assignment (small, achievable goal): if they complete it, move on to another step...if they don't, then let them know that when they DO complete the first assignment, a second will be forthcoming. Usually, they will not be back.

That has saved me a whole lot of time and trouble when I remember to apply it.

You have fed a whole long list of budding and "hungry" luthiers. Many of them complete the assignments and come back for more.

I'm one of those. Thanks for the food.

Chet

Ha, Ha, that reminds me so much of what I've started to do with our children. Their ages
range from 10 to 13, and it's getting quite challenging. As they get older, their desires become
more complex and difficult to fulfill (what satisfied them as little toddlers, a tickle here and there,
going for a walk in the park,...etc, don't do the trick anymore).

They want what adults have, but without the responsibility behind it. They only want the "results"
and the "rewards", but don't realize the path (sweat) required to obtain it. Actually, I should
say the character traits required to travel the path, such as:

commitment,
patience,
diligence,
humility (willingness to be taught),
seeing mistakes and failure as stepping stones.

Sadly (or should I say thankfully), these things are needed also in adults, like myself, in raising
children. In training them, I found myself being trained as well. Very Happy

Well, Craig I'm certainly glad that you are over on this message board. I value what you have to say and the manner in which you say it. It is very unfortunate that a few bad apples continue to stir the pot "over there". You're obviously taking the higher road and moving on which is good and most importantly it's great that you seem to be feeling good.

Thank you sir.

...in particular, because I am feeling good, if a bit slow yet - and am happy to be moving on. Happy to be here.

I'm here lately, posting at this site, because I had a recent departure from the place where I used to post very regularly, about violin making.

In my opinion, it had become somewhat negative there.

a place where personal attacks have become the norm. Many people there, from the past, are happily posting away there still. Hmm. And many are now gone.

I admit, I miss the old place somewhat, but I feel that I had a fair run there, when things were held in some perspective, and kept slightly on-track.

(I remember back when the main point there, was simply violin-making.)

Now, that's not really the case anymore - this is a posting location I HAVE found recently, where things are violin-related, and where violin related things are discussed, and where the popularity of the posters is based, simply, on their violin making knowledge (apparently), and not their "popularity" within the group, as a "philosopher or general life critic".

In essence, I believe, the internet is changing as we speak. Generally, it is changing in a direction that I, personally, don't really like. Oh well.

Perhaps I'm just a bit too negative right now, generally.

I've recently had a stroke, some 4 or 5 months ago now, and my viewpoint on what I want out of life, (and the internet) is radically different than it once was.

Please bear with me, as my language sometimes still gets lost, and I will tend to babble on about any damn thing.

Oh well. There are things that I have lost, it seems, forever.
But the truth is, that I still do enjoy discussions, on the internet, about specifically making and repairing violins, Period.

I do realize that any site owner, has an immensely difficult job in trying to please everyone involved, and keep an attending populace, posting.

One huge goal in my life, has become to gradually (I now realize) return back to violin making, and to discuss violin-related subject matter, with both friends and strangers alike. (hopefully not strangers for long). And I do mean, "internet" discussions, as, we are generally from different geographic locations.

I do notice that there are people posting here, who have been benchmark posters from the past (at least - from MY past). And so I am assuming that they post HERE, NOW, because of the possibilities that STILL exist here, where violin making alone, IS the main subject in our collective hearts, when it comes to the "internet posting" world.

I'm happy to have found a place where I can still comfortably babble on about violin-making, and hopefully, have it be kept on track.
(attention Lemuel!)

Thanks for listening. I apologize if this is not considered important - because, to me, it is.
It's very important to me, because violin making is still very important to me. And my only violin making friend, within reach, is now completely disabled, and in a wheel chair. I will say, his life, now, is unfortunately, not at all, in any way, about violins... It really brings things into a correct perspective for me.
Thank God there is the internet! Hopefully, I will always have a place to vent my endless and very often inconsequential babbling -

Craig T
I am here lurking for all the same reasons. I have not gotten involved in discussions on the other place because I also find it distasteful and a waste of time. This seems to be a much more useful forum. I have always liked to read your posts and know all about why you left. I feel that I can get involved here.
I'm not exactly in your neighborhood, but closer than most, Ft. Worth area. I make a trip to Ruidoso every year and would like to stop in and meet you sometime.
I am an amateur/hobbyist builder, have built 4 and repaired a bunch. i look forward to getting involved on this forum with you as well the others that are here to share knowledge without all the _______!

newo -

"Distasteful and a waste of time"

Hmmm, interesting observation - unfortunate, huh?...

Please, post your thoughts, and experiences, and questions here. The people I know who post here, are mostly interested in getting violin making information specifically answered and spread around.

I'm thinking you can Forget the whole "social cool", "popularity contest" things happening elsewhere.

Listen newo,
if you ever get to Roswell, call me a bit ahead of time if you can, but Saturday is by far my best day for other makers to come by and and spend some time visiting in the shop - and perhaps maybe even learning something interesting - like, for example watching a rehair. Or maybe a repair, or something in mid-build. And you can even try some of my fiddles hanging around for the fun of it... if you'd like to!
